Our History

Built on Service and Compassion

Emerging from a shared passion to serve our community, Caring and Serving Together (CAST) was established in 2011 by a group of everyday individuals, united by their love for God and their commitment to leading through service.

Over time, CAST has expanded to encompass numerous affiliate organizations and a remarkable network of serving partners spanning the sectors of education, business, nonprofit, healthcare, and technology.

Now CAST is situated in the One Center for Leadership in downtown Canton, Ohio, and comprises a diverse mix of business professionals, retirees, students, parents, educators, and community leaders, all sharing the conviction that we can create a positive impact in the lives of others by serving side by side.

The findings of a recent study conducted by Harvard suggest that long-term happiness can be attributed to two crucial factors: having warm and meaningful relationships with others and serving others.  I love that CAST’s history is deeply rooted in both of these concepts.  At its very core, CAST is all about serving others in a relational context.  We work shoulder to shoulder with our friends, responding swiftly to local needs, and collectively striving to bring about positive change in the local community.

The Foodbank couldn’t serve thousands of families each year if it weren’t for exceptional volunteers who give their time, talent, and passion to serve this organization and our neighbors facing hunger. The Foodbank is grateful for CAST and their commitment to local hunger relief.

Akron Canton Regional Foodbank

CAST provides a safe place for students to gather and volunteer in our community.  The students’ self-confidence, self-esteem, and sense of accomplishment grows by joining the CAST family.  The students gain a sense of pride and identity while serving in our community.

Ken Brunner vividly shares his journey of collaboration and community impact with CAST. An idea blossomed into substantial action, creating a legacy of education, mentorship, and resourcefulness that continues to change lives in our community today.

The Birth of CAST

A Heartfelt Beginning in 2011

CAST’s very first project was in 2011 when a group of passionate volunteers braved cold, rainy weather to transform an abandoned middle school into a welcoming space for students. As they cleared overgrown landscapes and planted beautiful flowers, they built lasting friendships and ignited the mission of CAST within their hearts. This experience laid the foundation and fostered a deep passion for demonstrating the power of Caring and Serving Together.
